About Mary Katharine
Mary was born in Jacksonville, Florida and courtesy of the United States Navy began her love of travel. She was a graduate of Waycross High School in Waycross, Georgia, Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta Georgia. She also studied at Georgia Tech and Clayton State University. She began her career at DeKalb Medical Center and continued that career with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. A lifelong Perioperative Nurse that found her calling in Operating Room Nursing. She enjoyed the ever changing environment and through her career traveled many different roads in fostering growth and change for her nursing colleagues and patients. She was an active Member of the Association of Perioperative Nurses Atlanta chapter serving in numerous elected positions and committee chairs. She was equally involved in the national organization serving on committees, task forces and specialty assemblies. She was a member of the St. Philip’s Parish Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonists, NSDAC. She was an active member of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Lilburn Georgia and served in many different roles. Active with mission activities, she continued her love of travel and nursing through medical mission trips.
Mary Katharine Masters Thurmond of Lilburn, Georgia died December 15, 2014 in Lilburn, Georgia. She is survived by her husband Michael Thurmond, Daughters Sarah Thurmond of Durham, North Carolina and Rebecca Thurmond of Pearland, Texas. Her Mother Mrs. Norman E. Masters, Sr. of Statesboro, Georgia, her Brothers & Sisters in Law Norman & Patty Masters, Jacksonville, Florida, Leonard & Renae Masters, Sylvania, Georgia and Sister & Brother in Law Joan & Monty Berger of Statesboro, Georgia. Her Father & Mother in Law, Bill & June Thurmond of Pearland, Texas. Brother and sister in Laws Rick & Delma Schriever, Pearland, Texas, Tom & Melanie Thurmond, Helotes, Texas, George & Teresa Galloway, Ft. Worth, Texas, Doug & Beverly Gilliam, Carey, North Carolina, Annette Marie & Gary DeMay Rochester, New York and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating the life of Mary was held at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church Saturday, December 20, 2014, with the Rev. Dr. Russ Weekley officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, St. Augustine, Florida.
